On Friday, February 26th, students will be downhill skiing at Vrolage Ski Hill or cross country skiing at Nakkertok, both in the Gatineau Hills. Organizer Mme Mel Kirby says that all but a few of Putman's 250 students chose to attend either of the two activities.

Four extracurricular downhill ski and snowboarding nights just ended this week with an excellent turnout of students and volunteers, made all the better by favourable weather. Students look forward to being back on the slopes or in the field on Friday.

Badminton

finish_line_waving_md_clrImpressive showing for Putman in Cross Country
The Putman Cross Country Team had a very successful season this year.  They endured frosty mornings and torrential downpours all in the name of running!  Our Pumas represented Putman at various meets, and we were lucky to have 16 representatives go on to participate in the Board Finals.  Six of our teammates placed in the top 20 of their age category – an impressive feat!  All 42 of our athletes demonstrated leadership, determination, and dedication this season.  They are all to be commended on their efforts!  We would like to extend a special ‘thank you’ to all of the friends and family members who supported our team this year.  We would especially like to thank those who took the time to drive/supervise our athletes, and to a parent who even ran with the students one chilly morning: Janey and Helen, Mrs. Betteridge, Ms. Snarr, Mr. St. Pierre, Mrs. Livingston, Ms. Weiser, Mr. Ladd, Mr. Lai, Mr. Childs, Mrs. Velichka, Mrs. Wong, and lastly to Mr. Smith who always came out to cheer us on, and provide healthy snacks!!  Keep running and smiling.  Go Pumas, go!

Putman boys and girls take Gold at June 09 Tier 2 Soccer Tournament

By Mme Kirby and Mr. Berger

Zi6_0331On June 16th and 17th the intermediate boys and girls soccer teams cleaned up in the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board’s Southwest Regional Soccer Tier 2 Tournament held at Centrepoint Soccer Fields.

In Tier 2 Girls Soccer, J.H. Putman took on Sir Winston Churchill for the Gold medal in a really close game. After two overtimes and penalty kicks, J.H. Putman took the gold and Sir Winston received the silver.

Greenbank vs Rideau Valley for the Bronze. Congratulations Greenbank for taking the Bronze.

In Tier 2 Boys Soccer, Greenbank and J.H. Putman fought it out for the Gold medal. They were supposed to play four games.  Putman was awarded with a win against Cedarview by default.

Game 2 was against Pinecrest.  The Pumas won 3-2.  The goal scorers were Tristan St.  Pierre, Josh Horton and Taylor Barbe who scored the winner with 3 seconds left in regulation time.  Eric Gillen, Mounir Afolabi, and Kevin Watson had assists.  It was a huge win for us.  We lost in the finals to Pinecrest last year.  This year it was payback.  The boys finally exercised their demons.

Game 3 was against Fisher Park.  It was total domination by the Pumas.  They pounced on them and never let up.  They scored early and often.  When it was all said and done the Pumas walked off with a 5-2 victory.  The goal scores were: Josh Horton, Faysal Farah, Kevin Watson, Jacob Schroeter, and Taylor Barbe.

Game 4 the Pumas squared off against Greenbank.  It was a close game.  By this time the boys were getting a bit tired.  They had not got their second wind yet plus when you factor in the heat it can be expected that energy levels will drop.  The final score was 1-1.  Josh Horton scored for us.  Fraser Curry was stellar in goal.  He made a beautiful save on a penalty shot.

At the end of the round robin Putman placed 2nd and Greenbank placed 1st due to goal differential.  According to the tournament convenor the coach for Greenbank was trash talking JH Putman PS.  As it turned out Putman would play against Greenbank for the championship.  Now the real season began: playoffs.  Separates the champions from contenders, the men from boys and the dogs from puppies.  The boys really pulled together.  They played their hearts out and got the result they desperately deserved a 4-1 victory.  This game had everything penalty shots, great goaltending, beautifully executed set plays, and a goal that was scored from close to center half.  The goal scores were: Taylor Barbe, Mounir Afolabi, Jacob Schroeter and Kevin Watson.

I would like to thank Mr.  McPherson-Hull, and Madame Kirby for all their help.  I would like to thank Mrs.  Soffer for coming out to cheer the boys on.  I would also like to thank Mr.  St.  Pierre, Ms.  Horton, and Mr.  Graham for volunteering to drive the team to and from the tournament.  Much appreciated.

Congratulations to the boys who can proudly say they are the 2008-2009 OCEAA Regional Champions!
