It's a great school year!

As always, we are experiencing another excellent year at Putman. Our children are privileged to be part of such a special school. The opportunities and activities that are provided to the students are a wonderful part of the experience of a small school environment.

Help from parents is one way to ensure that the experience our children receive is the best possible. There are a number of different ways to get involved at Putman – only one of which is through School Council.

Council is important in two main ways: organizing activities and fundraising for the school. As a parent, you can choose to get involved in either or both ways.

See Flyer (PDF)

Call for Members
Anyone interested in becoming a council member is invited to attend and consider running for a vacant position.  This is a great way to get to know what is going on at your child’s school, to familiarize yourself with other parents, and the school administration.  It is also a way for you to have a voice in your child’s education. A small investment of some time can reap so many rewards don’t miss the opportunity!

New Sound System for Gym

Thanks to the generosity of school council who contributed the majority of the funds, we are now the owners of a new portable sound system for the gymnasium. This system will support not only assemblies and presentations, but music for dance which is part of the physical education and daily physical activity programs.

Parental Involvement
How can parents be involved with their child’s education?  Here are just a few ways:

o Help with homework
o Attend Parent/Teacher interviews
o Volunteer in the school (field trips, baking, hot lunches)
o Belong to school council
While research shows there is a direct benefit for students when their parents are involved in their education, there are also side benefits for parents themselves.  They learn more about public education in Ontario, become part of a school community, and become engaged as citizens.

DID YOU KNOW?

The School Council is a group of parents, just like you, who join staff and the student community in monthly meetings to be informed, and to advise the principal about changes to your child's day-to-day school life.

School Council meetings are open forums for all Putman parents who would like to gain firsthand insight and have a voice in what's happening at Putman.

The principal and a staff member report on staffing, field trips, sports and cultural activities, scheduling changes, etc. We discuss what our school Board and Provincial Government are doing that will impact your child's education, and what can be done about it. We invite guest speakers on different subjects. We raise money for extra school activities, library books, sports equipment and science projects. And in the process we all get to know each other a little better.
